Feb 28,2024: Dang Ghorahi:

Tila Rana has been living with her one son, three daughters, and a sick husband at Lamahi Municipality-9, Bangetal in Dang district. She migrated two decades ago from Rolpa. After migrating to Dang, Tila engaged herself in a grocery shop and buffalo-taming profession for about a decade. However, the situation was not turning up as she expected. She also joined one of the cooperative groups there. She then worked as a beneficiary group for the SLVC-I project implemented by the Rural Development Center RWDC) and funded by Heifer International Nepal in Dang.

Her association with the group enabled Tila to participate in skill-oriented training related to goat rearing and vegetables provided by the project. Tila found herself drawn towards the profession of goat rearing and decided to get involved in commercial goat rearing. The SLVC project initially provided her with two goats and one additional goat after three years as a gift under the ‘Passing on the Gift’ program. Her goat shed is now running at full capacity after adding more goats by taking a loan of NRs 100,000.

Currently, Tila has a total of 82 goats including 26 she-goats. She has cultivated extensive grassland for the goats in 2 katha land. Goat rearing has given Tila the financial strength to send her children to good schools. She was able to provide proper medical treatment for her husband and he has now recovered from his illness.

Goat rearing has transformed Tila’s life. The people from her surroundings who never trusted her for a small amount of loan are coming and asking for loans from her. “I appreciate the gift of goats I received from RWDC and Heifer International Nepal, without which I would not have achieved my present goals,” says Tila with a smile on her face.

Last year, Tila earned NRs 500,000 from the sale of goats and got a subsidy of NRs 150,000 to support her livestock. She has no problem finding a market for livestock meat as Karmath Samajik Udhami Mahila Cooperative is helping her market her products. RWDC has also been promoting the cooperative that she is associated with. Tila has become an exemplary livestock entrepreneur and an example to her peers.
